At the height of its power, the Roman Empire covered a vast amount of territory and brought major advancements in engineering, architecture, science, art, and literature. Corruption and economic crisis has made the empire unstable and paved the way for aggressive barbarian tribes to attack.

I love the theme but after one play it seems more brutal than vanilla Pandemic so I need to play it more and I can see it has solitaire potential

One of my favorite iterations of Pandemic. The dice combat is actually of minimal importance.. If your strategy is go around fighting, fighting, fighting, then you will have a difficult time of it. They key is setting up forts and legions to defend (those remove cubes without rolling the dice). This game actually gives you MORE control that vanilla pandemic. If you know you have a problem city, then defend it. You can actually prevent a cube from being placed even if the card is drawn in this game, rather than just having your fingers crossed hoping not to get a bad draw. An ingenious design!

Love it! Best pandemic boardgame. Contrary to regular pandemic, every role and every event is equally useful. The female roles are tricky/ manipulative, the male roles are more straightforward/ combative. The dice, which are tipped in Rome's favor, mitigate programmed play. Forts are more useful than research centers. Travel is less whimsical. Remove cubes by either fighting or allying with barbarians.
