This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Game is ok once you learn it. The teach is bad. Would not play unless everyone at the table already knows how to play.

5/10/23: Initial impression: There are some interesting mechanical concepts that the game presents. Specifically the worker placement shows a level depth that I like: blocking, hard choices, forward planning. The ability to jump ahead on the map via other peoples tracks adds a level of player interaction that steps this apart from other euro train games (euro train games as opposed to cube rails, 18xx, AoS, etc). But, this feels like mechanics in search of a good game. The good points are overshadowed (overwhelmingly) by some glaring missteps. The iconography is just bad as is the rulebook. The game flow is clunky, overly procedural and it just bogs down as the game goes on (its a euro game...the game is telling me to make a comboing-type engine, let me fire it off how I want too!). The game art and the map-board are just horrendous to look at and really doesn’t create a setting that draws me into the game. Taking all of this into account, the game is just fiddly. A nugget of a good euro game is here, but it needed to be developed and refined, the jagged edges needed to be smoothed out. I don't think there is enough here to keep a season mid weight train-gamer interested (hey, you stick a train theme on a mid weight game you'd better be marketing to that crowd), and there are definitely better euro games that out there.

The components of the deluxe edition of Pacific Rails are truly marvelous. The attention to detail and quality of the components sets a high standard that I wish all board games could achieve. The tactile experience and visual appeal greatly enhance the overall enjoyment of the game. One of the standout features of Pacific Rails is the combination of a novel worker placement and tile laying mechanism. This unique blend adds depth and strategic choices to the gameplay, creating a compelling experience for players. The integration of these mechanics showcases the game's innovative design. However, one aspect that could be improved is the scalability of the game for low player counts. With fewer players, the map can feel excessively large, resulting in wide open spaces for each player to build their rail tracks. This can lead to a less engaging experience and a lack of meaningful interaction. To address this, it would be beneficial to consider the inclusion of a double-sided map in an expansion, featuring a smaller map specifically designed for two players. This would help create a more balanced and engaging experience for lower player counts. Additionally, the inclusion of a solo mode would be a welcome addition to Pacific Rails. Solo modes not only enhance the replayability of a game but also provide an opportunity for solo players to fully immerse themselves in the gameplay experience. Adding a solo mode would further broaden the appeal of Pacific Rails and cater to a wider range of players. Overall, despite the scalability challenges at low player counts, Pacific Rails showcases an excellent fusion of worker placement and tile laying mechanics. The deluxe edition's outstanding components contribute to the game's overall quality and enjoyment. With the potential for a tighter experience through a double-sided map expansion and the addition of a solo mode, Pacific Rails has the opportunity to become an even more compelling and versatile game.
