Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

A pretty but shallow set collecting game. Chaotic at 4p as it was very easy for other players to swipe public contracts that you were working towards, or upgrade a tile that burns all the resources cubes you were saving on it. I do like that the placement of your resource cubes dictates the locations that you can expand to, it adds a nice spatial element to an otherwise simple game. Some interesting ideas, but I don't think it quite works.

This is not a good game. I backed it on Kickstarter. A major mistake. I wanted a game that would plow into the evolutionary changes that Darwin identified while traveling on the HMS Beagle. But this isn't that game. The game mechanics are boring and arbitrary. Although the artwork is very good. This game looks superb on a table, but that is the best thing I can say. The game play itself is atrocious. Arguably a very bad game. I'll be more careful about which games I back on Kickstarter.

Since the set of tiles everyone is competing for is exceedingly small (just four at the beginning), I think this game requires lots of strategic planning and anticipating opponent moves. The cards seem to push the game into lighter territory, but I'm not sure that's true. The most random part of the cards appears to be your chance to obtain ones that increase your tile selection. So, we have a game that certainly looks light, but in reality could be played in an exceedingly cut-throat fashion with the right group. There's enough variation to warrant lots of plays, which I think this game requires to properly shine. However, the gameplay feels everso slightly flat so I'm not sure how often Darwin will be able to claw its way on to the table. It's not the fittest game around, but definitely worthy of some kind of an award.
