Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Initial rating after one play, want to try the lower randomness variants. I found that there was a lot going on with the game, but still played fairly casually. This may be due to the theme or the multiplayer solitaire nature of the game. I did encounter the randomness issues but there are several variants suggested by the designer to make everything drafting based which I think would fix that issue. It did bring out some AP in me and I am definitely not an AP prone player. But you only have 16 actions in this game so that contributes to the AP. Rulebook is atrocious. Absence of bullet points or step by step lists for what to do during phases. It's almost written in prose, just large paragraph after large paragraph, I had to look up rules on BGG for the most part.

Our group enjoyed the theme a lot. There is a considerable amount of luck involved. Maybe enough luck to balance itself out and not be problematic. Not enough games under my belt to know for sure.

There is something particularly NEAT about this game. Beyond the unique theme and the way that stories grow thanks to the combination of events, guests, and servants...well, it's a terribly WELL-BALANCED game. There is a really solid bunch of resource-management mechanisms that underly it, along with elements of timing and just a dash of hindering others. This is a tricky game, but the theme is absorbing enough to get a new player past the initial hurdles. In addition, the creator is so passionate and competent about his creation that you can't help feel the love in every card, tile, and meeple.
