Oath: Chronicles of Empire and Exile + Sleeves Bundle (Kickstarter Edition)
45m - 120m
1 - 5 Players
Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
In storytelling games, players are provided with conceptual, written, or pictorial stimuli which must be incorporated into a story of the players' creation.

After 2 plays - is this a keep or a pass? I still have no idea, some great ideas and cool stuff but our second game just felt like everyone was going around searching decks of cards are not doing much else. My hope is this game ends up as one you bring out for 5-10 plays every few years and everyone has a great time, but could equally be a game too awkward to table. 7.5/10 Update: Next games have been better, really feel the world evolving throughout our plays. 8/10

The components are excellent and the theme is somewhat interesting, but I suspect those admittedly redeemable qualities, the prestige of the designer, and months of Kickstarter anticipation are the cause of the hype behind this game. There are more offenses to game design here than I care to list, but the primary source of frustration when playing Oath is the endless king making in the last half of the game. The combat isn't very interesting or exciting, and barely stopping your opponent from clutching victory feels more like a chore than an epic struggle. At some point early on, I just wanted the game to end. Ultimately my victory was determined by the roll of a die, and that never feels good.

Thoughts: The Oathkeeper of the People (win by holding the Banner of the People's Favor) is hard for the Chancellor. He starts with the banner but because he only wins after 8 rounds (with possible wins at the start of the 6th, 7th and 8th rounds), he has to manage the Banner's mechanic for a long time: the Banner of the People's favor requires that one favor token be added or removed every wake phase of the holder, with the conditions that the minimum favor token is 1 (if it would lose that 1, the holder loses control of the Banner) and after 6, the banner requires you to add or remove 2 instead of 1 favor token. Additionally, anyone can retrieve the banner by placing more favor tokens than are on it currently. Managing this mechanics for up to 8 rounds seems challenging when compared with any exile, which only needs to hold it for two rounds or 1 round (with the Vision of Rebellion).
