Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.

Recomendable

There are certainly echoes of 7 Wonders here. We are again collecting sets of different coloured cards, with each colour scoring in a different way. Whereas in 7 Wonders we are building a production engine, in Nidavellir it's a bidding engine under construction, with lower value coins traded for higher values. The catch, that I rather like, is that you have to make a bid with your 0 value coin in order to do that. Like 7 Wonders, play in Nidavellir is divided into different ages - two in this case. In between ages there is a "troop evaluation" in which majorities are rewarded. I would have liked greater differentiation in the decks for the two ages. The second does feel very much a repeat of the first. I think the blind bidding system works pretty well because it's not too difficult to work out an opponent's level of interest in any given set of cards. The heroes are another thing that differentiates Nidavellir. I like how collecting them obliges you to maintain a reasonably balanced tableau. I like the range of powers they have, though this can lead to pauses in play as players check what available heroes can do and calculate which will be the most beneficial. So, Nidavellir works pretty well and its quite an enjoyable game. To someone like me who has played 7 Wonders and Ra (another set collector with auctions and ages) an awful lot, it feels as though there isn't quite enough to set it apart. Production quality of my Italian edition is reasonable, though the card holders are awfully light weight and prone to falling over. I thought the Royal treasure chest might be a waste of cardboard to rival the Everdell tree, but it actually does a decent job. The card art, particularly on the basic dwarf cards, is unexciting. At least it doesn't distract from the important information. The English rules translation is pretty dreadful.
