Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.
Tile Placement

Enjoyed among the stars more. This felt like among the stars but players share the building of facility spaces and mostly battles between each other to gain control of them.
Born-of-Ashes
This is a fine game for people who want the 4x flavor without the heavy reliance on attacking. However this means that players have to be near perfect in their expansion strategies in order to progress efficiently. If you mess up or fall behind there is no room for catchup, just try harder next time. The game drags out for a while so it is hard to justify repeat plays.

Quite unique 4X game wrapped in a Euro-styled drafting game with tile laying. New Dawn is a sequel to the drafting and tile laying game Among the Stars. New Dawn adds exploration, area control, and more aggressive player interaction. What makes it special? * 4X with tile laying. Players explore and create the world by laying tiles from their hand for certain benefits. These tiles are then used to control and conquer. * Good mix of Euro and Ameritrash. Pros: + Artwork. + Unique factions with little special powers and technologies. + Components: plastic buildings + Ambassadors management with special powers: moving them around to benefit from them. + Resource management: each colony increases your income but also makes you more vulnerable for attacks. + Scoring public objectives by spending resources in player order (first come, first serve) + Exploration: players create the common world by placing tiles from their hand. They then use the tiles for area control. + Spatial puzzle: tiles interact with each others. + Strategic: build and move your mobile HQ to protect your most valuable facilities or attack other tiles. + Tactical hand management + Combat is simple and based on dice with some mitigation options + Building combos with cards, techs, and bonus actions. + Replayability (a lot of different and effects cards each game) + Modular board. + Some optional variants included that really add something to the gameplay. + Easy to teach and play. + Quick playing time for this kind of game. + Scales well with all player counts. + Quite compact (rectangular) game box + Easy to teach and play. Neutrals: # Language dependent # High player interaction: taking control of other players' facilities but somehow non-destructive. Combat is based on dice rolls. # Luck of the draw for cards. # Luck of the roll for combat (has some push your luck elements). # Busy board with a lot of tokens and icons. # Round structure is quite long and hard to remember. # Big game board that requires a lot of table space. # The game demands aggressive play with direct player interaction since the board is quite open and makes it hard to defend. # A round can be quite chaotic and there may happen a lot with higher player counts (unpredictability). Cons: - Dice rolls and direct player interaction may be a turn-off for some people who expect a Euro game. - The gameplay is quite simple but the rules sometimes lack some clarity. - Small text on cards / hard to read. Related games: * Eclipse (more classical 4X game with Euro styled economy, random exploration) * Sid Meier's Civ (complex 4X civilization game with different victory conditions, random exploration)
