Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.

It is a super interesting dice placement game. There is a lot of variability in the game from the different ships to the various expansions. The Mercenaries: A great expansion that really increases the number crunching in the game. Now it is not only about getting all the crew and arriving at the abyss first, but also the mid game matters as crossing the Phantom will cause a collision. The mercenaries add to you power but block spaces on your board. Very interesting challenge!

The heroic feats and the darkhouse expansions with the donut sub are when the decisions become agonizing. The first three expansions provide utility and character to your crew members. The challenges are increased, and in the reefs and the mages, the benefits pay off. The mercenaries provides a different way to lose, adding tension to the mid game and creating a first act. The game sets up and plays quickly, all in about 15 minutes. My favourite of the Oniverse.

Update January 2021: When playing with all expansions, it is a crunchy and hard game. Seems to me this is the only way to play. I am starting to like it more, if played like this. I need to gauge to what degree luck can be mitigated. --- Update October 2018: Nautilion continues to not excite me. It works, it looks great, it has lots of decisions to make, but I just don't like it as much as the other Oniverse games, even with all expansions included. And I think I know why: A) the excellent artwork is less present (due to the small size of the tokens) than in the other Oniverse games, so the game soon becomes a numbers game and the art and theme disappears. B) the game is quite lighter than the other in the series. It ends up straight in the "ok" class. --- The game works on many levels. As a simple solitaire puzzle for casual gamers, up to a meaty probability look-ahead complex experience for gamers, if one adds all the expansions. It is elegant, flows well, and has meat on the bones. However, for some reason Nautilion simply failed to excite me in the same way that all previous games of the series have. I feel this boils down to lack of innovation, nothing in Nautilion seems novel and exciting in the way that Onirim, or Castellion, or even Urbion did. Still, this is a fun game and a gorgeous production.
