Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

A really fun dice action selection game that was a surprise hit for me at Spiel 2015. I worry a bit about the replay value of the game over time, but as of right now we are enjoying it.

An okay game of dice drafting, set collection, and variable player powers; there is also a life/death time wheel that imparts a certain amount of action point allowance in that the best actions cost more time, which is a finite resource for players. The central mechanic is drafting dice in pairs from a shared pool each round to perform various actions, most of which require advancing your time marker which eventually causes one of your workers to retire/die. The goal is to earn the most VPs from producing goods, filling contracts, building certain cards, and collecting and "banking" story points. Players draft 2 pairs of dice each round, and each pair of dice can potentially trigger multiple actions. The game ends after a certain/set number of workers (scaled by player count) have retired/died; however, the total number of rounds and game length are variable depending on how quickly players spend "time" and retire their workers. The dice luck makes the game more tactical than strategic, but a reasonable amount of planning/strategy is needed when selecting buildings, contacts, and bonus cards for your village because it's in your best interest to maximize the benefits from a few dice numbers. Overall, the game is pretty good but a bit slow/dull/mechanical, and there are some "forced" (fixed) pairings of dice values on production buildings that are a bit annoying. For me, My Village just doesn't have the same "let's play again" feeling that I get from its predecessor (Village).

Waaaaaaay too long for what it is. The game was fun for 45 minutes, and lasted over 2 hours. Even the 90 on the game box are twice as long as the game is fun for. Even worse, near the end, options are so limited that you play for breadcrumbs for the last fifth of the game. The dice mechanism would have made a nice filler. I could care less about the time wheel.
