Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

This was about as Euro as you can get, in a good way. Everything is interconnected and relating to scoring points. The main rondel system was pretty interesting and felt dynamic with a lot of player interaction. In a two player game, the neutral player can block spaces and also be used to take more powerful actions by getting resources. The wall system is interesting because you want to protect the investment you spent on the buildings but it takes you back a number of actions that you could have used on something else. However they do score influence which allows you to get more cards which scores more later. There are some fiddly rules like defending the city gives you an influence and lot of little symbols that make it hard to remember. There is also no player aid but the back of the rulebook does an OK job. There was some ambiguities in the rules that the forums cleared up. The art and production is awesome which was expected from the designer. I have a hard time placing these heavier Euros in the collection because I don't get to play them as often and 20 pages of rules really slows down my ability to play repeatedly. I also find myself wanting to play it numerous times in a day or week because of the brain burn and lack of completely divergent strategies. There are definitely some different paths here but its a similar puzzle each game where you take one or the other. I think in order to justify owning these we needed some limitations or randomness. Some tiles that are blocked each round, maybe the invaders flip the tiles for a few turns, etc. We enjoy games with all open information but its hard to return to those with no randomized elements as they don't have as high level of replayability once you figure out the puzzle.

Delightful modern euro with plenty of room for positive interaction. Each player gets 12 moves which will escalate scope as the game goes on. Best with 4.

Very solid Euro that centers around an area control and engine-building puzzle where players select actions that can produce extra resources the more buildings of a single color are built there. The board contains the various minigames associated with the main actions which makes the board a bit busy despite Ian O'Toole colorful artwork. Curious to give it another try and see how replayable it is.
