The Campaign/Battle Card Driven mechanic is a relatively recent development in war games that focuses the players' actions on cards they have in their hand. The very basic idea is that performing a single action uses a single card. Games where cards are used to determine the outcome of battles do not use this mechanic.
Campaign / Battle Card Driven
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

(Solo) There's a lot your team can do each turn, and that's a great thing because the enemy deck will gladly keep you busy. Great storytelling flow to my introduction sessions to the game. The rating could go up with more plays.

Update: Haven't gotten back to the villains in this set yet BUT I did play both heroes again. Not a fan of shadow cat at all. Her gimmick just felt boring to play. However on the flip side I REALLY loved playing as Colossus! Manipulating his toughness cards is really fun in how they work with a number of his other cards. I had a really great time with this character. Still need to pull out the rest of the villains and play against them but so far: Colossus - 9 Shadowcat - 4 Sabertooth - 4 Initial thoughts: So far not impressed with what I'm seeing. I should say I'm not a huge X-Men fan so I'm sure that lends into my lagging enthusiasm for this particular expansion. I have only played against sabertooth thus far but thought he was a rather boring boss. I will say that I enjoy how collosus and shadowcat interact and work together, although they aren't my fav hero decks. Initial rating is a 5, which is the lowest rating I've given any of the sets for this game. But, with there now being like 5 different big box expansions, there are alot better choices when picking an expansion to play/buy. All that said, if you are a huge X-Men fan then I highly suspect you will enjoy this alot more than I did. I will update my rating as I play more of the villains.
