Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.
Simultaneous Action Selection
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

Mage Wars Arena: Battlegrounds Domination 2015 expansion Build the Arena of your dreams and battle against enemies for control of the V'Tar orbs with an all new rule set for the award-winning Mage Wars Arena! Battlegrounds Domination is a new set of expansions for Mage Wars Arena that introduce new rules to play by and incorporate the use of custom puzzle-cut tiles for players to build their own Arena boards to play on! And yes, as you can see, there are images on the tiles that are accompanied by optional rules that introduce terrain effects as well! The first Battlegrounds expansion, Domination, introduces Domination Mode, where players will vie for control of powerful V’Tar orbs that grant new powers and offer a new option to win, by gaining points through maintaining control of these powerful devices. Additionally, there are 20 customized tiles for players to use in creating their own, or suggested, Arenas to play in. Finally, there are also 116 cards including new spells for use in traditional Mage Wars Arena play and the new Domination mode, introduced in this expansions’ rules. As an added bonus, Battlegrounds Domination introduces two new promo cards, available only in the first printing of the set: The Ankh of Asyra and Blur!

In a small local group with only 3 players, this is the expansion we were really waiting for! Being in Ireland, there was no local availability before Christmas. Luckily, my girlfriend was able to get an English copy in Austria! So Santa delivered on XMas Day :) The game plays very differently to Arena. Victory conditions are really different, so we're gonna have to change our strategies and our books! The main thing is that Arcane Wonders have managed to get the game to support 3-4 players without killing what Arena is or how it plays. The game is still supremely well balanced and is still a very tense battle, just including more than two mages! Killing the other mages is still a victory condition - its just that chasing it is likely gonna cause your defeat! Two mages ganging up on one? Fine - the single mage will just concentrate on the victory conditions and win! After one play with 3 players, I'm extremely happy with how the game plays and I think that the BG expansion really works so well. Now that we don't have to leave the 3rd player in our group watching games - I can definitely see Mage Wars being played much more often in our group. With the ability to field a 4th player - we can hopefully start introducing other players too!

The domination rules are a good addition and will tend to create shorter games which is a plus. There are some reasonable new cards and the larger board spaces help a little when playing the game. It's a shame it took so long in coming and that the idea of scenario based missions has not been developed further - the game remains arena bound. The opportunity could have been taken to include some more damage and mana tokens as these occasionally run out during play. Also, the rule book is a ridiculously large format. I'm still not sure I would want to play MW multi-player so that aspect of the game is a little underwhelming for me. So quite expensive for what I am likely to get out of it - the domination mode could have been implemented with a small card expansion and a few markers. Overall OK.
