An excellent "meaty filler": something that plays in the same amount of time as Splendor, but with much more interesting choices. The two games have something in common in that you need to think ahead: you want to build cards that are not only easy to build but whose production abilities will combo well together (and that will hopefully unlock your leaders). The marble selection mechanic is interesting and unique, and I love the added puzzle of managing your depot limits. The game is just a nice package altogether, even though it doesn't really feel like Lorenzo at all. Rating is likely to go up with more plays.

November 2023 - 6 - 2 plays (all at 2 player) + Marbles are cool, even if they are just a gimmick to try and set the game apart. But they do work well, better than moving tokens or something around. + Plays quickly and still has some "crunch" for a short weeknight game + The constraint on how many resources you can store in the 3 levels of your storage area after picking from the marble tray seemed initially like it was just there to add some other tacked on constraint to the game but it is pretty fun in practice. Adds a layer of consideration in which row of marbles to take and when you need to do production actions to free up more spaces. = Won both racing for development cards and racing up the pope track. Both times the other player was close to ending the game as well so appears both are valid approaches. - Find I forget to move resources to bottom of storage area after doing a production action. Kind of fiddly how that works. - A lot of the best parts of Lorenzo are stripped out here and left really with just the production actions and art style. Still an okay game on its own but overall kind of forgettable since there are plenty of other resource conversion games out there. - Seems that there isn't much strategy regarding which development cards to take. If your opponent takes the card you were looking at it really doesn't matter much, just see what other card you can buy with the resources you have on hand and it doesn't set you back much at all.

Very tactical game, the ever changing state of the marbles makes it hard to predict what resources will be available. This is amplified by the randomness of the building costs means you could be saving for a particular building, only to have it change to cost resources you don't have, if another player buys it before you. I am sad they didn't give the buildings names, because it makes it feel like I am trying to solve simultaneous conversion equations instead of playing a game. I like the restrictiveness of the resource storage as it forces you to build an engine and use it, instead of just collecting resources from the market. There is an enjoyable sense of escalation, as your conversion engines become more efficient, and the faith timer rushes towards the end. Decent filler game despite my misgivings. It captures the feel of the original Lorenzo, while having completely different mechanisms.
