Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

La Granja is, simply put, my comfort food of board games. There is no other game in my 1700+ game collection which has brought me more joy and one I look forward to playing every time. This game was introduced to me when I first started getting into Euro gaming. The impact was instant, lasting and continues til this day. What makes it special? Well, for one, dice drafting (my personal favorite mechanic) and it is done to perfection here in a round robin style. Then, there is the subtle card play (the ability to play any of the four sides of the card (each having a different ability leaves for a nice, clean decision space) and opens the way to a whole lot of strategy and tactics, tack on well integrated mechanics like a transportation phase, a siesta track, a competitive market place and you have a winner. The game (6 rounds) somehow plays incredibly fast but it always feels right to the games arc and thats where I think the design just nails it. The designer (Ode) was clearly inspired by Feld/Rosenburg and I think most would agree this is a god thing. In fact, the legend himself Stephan Feld has contributed to this Deluxe version. Ultimately, I am very much looking forward to this Master Production of the game I call #1 and at a price point of $169, I'm all in!

*Moved over from original* After two plays, back to back, I really enjoyed it. The gameplay is smooth and easy to follow. With a good mix of tactical and strategic play. The length of the game was really good, 90 min. each time (with two players). Looking forward to more plays to see if replayability is good. This gives me a Agricola feel mixed with... Mottainai? That oversize expansion is totally unusable. Can almost make cylinders with those bent boards and tiles...
