Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Pattern Building is a system where players place game components in specific patterns in order to gain specific or variable game results. For example: placing chips on 2, 4, 6, 8 on a board gets the player an action card they can use later in the game.

Played a demo copy at Origins Game Fair. Had a lot of fun. Simple mechanics combined in a unique way. Fun strategy that won't make your head hurt.

I like a lot about this game, the Onitama stolen movement mechanics, the simplicity of play, and the theme. I do not like how over powered the Kaiju that can repick their battle cards is. Seriously, who ever gets that guy wins every time so far. I am a bit torn on the rock/paper/scissor mechanic for combat. I like it in theory, but the deck gods could simply smite you more often than not. Components- 6/10 Theme- 7/10 Mechanics- 6.5/10 Fun- 7/10

Disclaimer that I only played this once so this is my first impression. I thought the game had a lot of potential: The theme is good, I liked how strategic movement was, and there are some unique abilities to mix up play style for each player. What killed it for me was the combat being essentially rock paper scissors so it wasn't all that interesting. There were also a couple rules that were unclear, though that was a smaller issue compared to the combat.
