Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

One against many. Evil player tries to advance their schemes, while heroes try to beat them. Much of the play is trying to guess opponent's next move.

A one versus many game where each side works to complete crisis cards, either thwarting them with ability points and rolls of the dice, or increasing their stage with card places. Both the heroes (Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, and Cyborg) and the villain (Darkseid) must manage their hand of actions and their resources efficiently. Each crisis will get harder to thwart as it gets closer to completion. And each has special powers. The artwork on the action cards are good and the miniatures look nice, but the other cards and boards are a bit of a miss. Because the board is mostly a boring picture of a world map, the location spaces are smaller than they should have been, and extra components were put into place to make it functional. Instead of just playing a crisis card to a location, you have to find the identical crisis tile and play those to the map, and put the identical location tile on the crisis card. It works, but they could have easily just made the location spaces bigger and entirely dropped the need for searching for the matches. There's also no artwork on the crisis cards and tiles, so while they refer to different villains and such, that won't mean anything to players unless they are familiar with DC. I know some people like the game because the minis can be used for other HeroClix games. But that's not a selling point for me. I would have to pick up the mini just to read the tiny information on it anyway. I don't know why you wouldn't just track that on a board instead. I do like the mechanics of choosing which of your actions to play, returning to your base to heal and get certain spent cards back, the initiative being controlled by the action card selection, heroes getting XP for completing parts of ability challenges for each crisis while the villain gets XP for the challenges missed. The aspect of heroes and villains fighting didn't really come up much. It's tough to knock someone out. They just return to base and heal almost instantly. And the spending of XP was a little lack luster too. It is nice it increases abilities and adds power cards, but it just doesn't happen that much. There seemed to be a balancing issue though. It's easier for the villain. He can single handedly be making progress on multiple crisis cards at once with little effort, while heroes end up having to work together to complete a challenge or rely on rolling well on the die, and thus need to go back to the base more often. While the villains powers and energy pool grow with player count. We played with 2 heroes and my group was frustrated with it. So the game has its flaws, but it still interests me.

Mostly purchased this for the Heroclix figures inside; the game itself has many moving parts and tends to play faster than the time you took to set it up.
