Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Voting allows players to influence the outcome of certain events within the game. The vote may be all or nothing, choosing a target for an effect, or to determine the results of certain situations. Players’ votes may not have equal weight, and blocking a player from voting can be a valid tactic.
Voting
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

We played John Company 2e 3 times in a row today because I just got my physical copy last week. We played 3p twice on the 1710 scenario and once on the 1758 scenario (which is my favorite). I've played JoCo 2e 8 times already on tts so I know the game pretty well. First time the company failed and I won. Second time the company failed and I had -3 points. And the final game first place had 55 points, second had 51 and I had 41. Obviously, the company failing or succeeding can have a huge impact on the game, and just because the company hasnt failed doesn't mean that the company is doing well. There is a huge gulf between a turn where the company makes 45 dollars and pays 30 in expenses and the company making 45 dollars and having 42 dollars in expenses. Another interesting thing to discuss is that the firm game adds a lot of time to the game. We finished the two 1710 games in 2 hrs or less, since we had already played the game before, which is a huge improvement from 1e. However, the 1758 game took 3 1/2 hours and we didn't even play through all of it (ended on round 4 instead) The laws are honestly such an interesting part of the game, and one of the true real improvements from 1e. My friend, in the second game had 3 luxuries and plenty of money and actually got taxed out of ALL of his retirements (6 points) and luxuries (which are worth 2 points each) with just one failed law that forced a tax on luxuries and a window tax. There also also laws that can combine all the governships, completely change how the director of trade works, or eliminate all your debt. Don't snooze on laws. The governorships can really make or break the game, because they can make 2-3 regiments each on the ones that roll 4 dice instead of 3. Another big upgrade from the first game is the prize cards, which just dramatically change the reward of retiring. These can range from making buying shares 1! dollar, instead of 2-5 or just 2 points and some restriction you'll have to play with for the rest of the game, or, the one that won the third game, the ship yard that gives you a dollar per extra ship purchased. I think our winner gained 20! dollars over the course of the game with that. I also just love how the event system makes it really punishing to be too greedy, the company's tables can turn in a single round. Finally, it's just absolutely beautiful, easier to run with new players with all the new reference cards, and much more evocative than the first one. The depth of the research that Cole performed as part of his masters? phd?, and the years of development that were spent between the first and second game all result in a top 3 game of all time for me. To close, I'll say that it's one of my few 10/10 games with Dune, Glory to Rome, 1817, pax Pamir 2e, food chain magnate with the expansion, spirit island with the jagged earth expansion, and Indonesia being my other tens. Based on the bgg scale. (Outstanding, will always enjoy playing). I greatly recommend it.

Jury is still out on this one, don't really know how to feel about it. But honestly this is the kind of game where the group makes the game.
