Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.

Wow. I'm surprised it took me this long to get this game. I wasn't keen on racing games before, but this is much more than a racing game. Sure, you're trying to get to the finish line, but that focus has never won me a game yet. Instead, it matters to be the best pirate. you may not come in across the line first, but who cares when you've got all that booty to spend! Seriously, this game has it all. Easy to learn rules, family friendly, a 2 player variant that ADDS TO the game instead of subtracting from it, great components, an AMAZING insert for storage, and a PIRATE THEME! Wow. Again, Wow.

(2) 3-6. Pirate ship racing game that I got in a trade. Not a lot of strategy, but very fun and thematic! BEAUTIFUL game art. Rules: http://gameworks.ch/2010/pdf/jamaica_rules.pdf Review: http://meepletown.com/2011/01/review-jamaica/

So this game is not tactically super interesting, nor is it brain burney. But for sitting around a table, playing a game while possibly having a beer, this game does well. It's also probably easy enough that non-gamers can get in on the action. I'm not a big pirate fan (Go Ninjas!), but if you like that theme, this game will be even better.
