Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

2023 Apr: I recently got my hands on Imperium: Classics and I must say, the twists in its deck-building mechanics feel really fresh, both from a player and a bot/automa perspective. However, the rulebook isn't great. There are a lot of icons and, as a beginner, it's tough to know which ones to focus on. The rules don't help much in this regard and are sometimes impractically organized. I wouldn't call it bad work, but a game of this complexity deserves a more thorough job in terms of rulebook editing. But hey, I'd rather have a slightly weak rulebook than a weak game! And they’ve even streamlined the rulebook in the latest 'Horizons' box! The game itself is fantastic! This is what a deck-building solo card game should feel like. It has five difficulty levels (which is awesome). I played on the medium level 3 and lost by just one point to the automa (in case of a tie, I wouldn't win either, plus I had to avoid societal collapse). The game really gives off a civilization-building feeling. For instance, in 'Dominion' I didn’t really feel anything, but that might just be subjective. There are several scenarios that can trigger the end of the game and the scoring, which is another great feature. But what I love most are the novel inner mechanics of deck-building. For example, there's an age transition similar to '7 Wonders', without the need to redistribute or set aside cards. There are also accessible developments that allow you to further advance your empire without complicating things. These innovations, I think, are brilliantly simple and superb. I also really like that you can get rid of negative cards in four different ways, opening up decision-making possibilities. Plus, the market in this game really moves! For example, in Everdell's solo mode, the market doesn’t flow as well, which diminishes the fun or leads to house rules or expansions to fix it… Another thing: there are five difficulty levels with hairline yet understandable differences. And on top of that, the different nations have their own difficulty ratings. You might play the easiest nation in the hardest way, or the most complex nation in the easiest mode, who knows? It's great that the game includes these possibilities for depth and complexity without the need for expansions or add-ons. On a value-for-money basis, it’s a best buy. I don't mean it's just a good value for the average player or a good investment. But for those who love this type of game, the amount of content, replayability, and well-functioning mechanical blend you get for the price is something you shouldn't leave in the store. 2023 Apr: 9.00 2024 Jan: 9.25 I've played this one a few more times. Stunned. From this little box grows vast sums of value in its replayability and the wealth of nations to experiment with. Make no mistake, this card game is not simplified by any degree. Think Through The Ages level complexity.

Fascinating - rating is preliminary, but I want to explore this further and think there could be a game with real staying power DESPITE my doubts re: interactivity, game length, and player count. (Yes these are all clearly related, no, I don't care about solo.)
