Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

2019-08-30 Initial Rating: 5.0 (August 2019) I bought Hokkaido before knowing it was a card drafting game. As soon as I found out, my desire to play it plummeted. After I played it, I can say it´s not really for me. Hokkaido´s rules are easy to teach. You can do it under 9 minutes. Playtime is around 60 minutes the first time. The game´s components are ok, nothing too special, the art isn’t very nice IMO. The theme is ok, but it´s pasted on and you don´t feel it at all through the game. Gameplay is based of card drafting and I have come to dislike most card drafting games. I found you need to pick a path (many times at random) in the first couple of turns and then the rest of the turns you draft cards that best support that path. I’m not saying card drafting games don´t have decisions attached to them, but I feel the decision making IS very easy and obvious in most card drafting games. I do like card drafting when it isn’t the driving mechanism behind the game but when it acts as a support mechanism (Agricola, Terraforming Mars, Through the Ages). Hokkaido’s decisions seemed very obvious to me, each turn you draft a card and then you play it in your tableau, the spatial puzzle is a bit more interesting and you need to be mindful of the mountain range, but, overall, it´s a very easy game. Hokkaido has an advance mode with goals and it´s much better when played this way. The terraforming tiles were never used in our game as the cubes gave you more VPs in combination with other cards. I guess there will be situations where terraforming is best than keeping the cubes, but we didn’t see it in our game. Bottom line, Hokkaido can be a good (almost) casual game, but it´s too light for me. Nowadays I don’t enjoy card drafting games and Hokkaido is 90% card drafting, it also has a bit of spatial puzzle. I will sell my copy ASAP and my desire to play it again is very low. I was bored by it near the end. Current Rating: 4.0

2018. 2-5p, 30-40m. Re-imp of Honshu. Card drafting, hand mgt., splaying (with placing cards ontop of cards like the game called Hanging Garden).
