Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Zman Edition. Gateway Game I Enjoy. Sadly, there are so few gateway games I can stomach for any lengthy duration. This one has the historical connection I have been finding a greater taste for but Smallworld is a great game too. The (Small)World of Warcraft pushed this out of my collection but I am somewhat unsure I made the correct decision.

A very attractive new edition of this classic game. This one builds upon A Brief History of the World, reducing it from six epochs down to five. The overrun rule has been removed, which means the rules read a little easier. Ties eliminate both attacker and defender, and caravans enable barren areas to be crossed. The game feels very slick now, and is quite fast to play with four or less. The production while initially looked a little drab, is actually very attractive. It can be a little difficult locating your empire areas now if you're not familiar with the game or history, due to the tight colour palette. The new generic pawns - globes on pedestals - are a little odd, and possibly a little too large, but work nicely. I was a little dubious, but after a game I'm sold. Really nice, and happy I picked it up.

Small World simply does this genre better, not a bad game but one that I can't see myself wanting to play again any time soon. Main problems are that the downtime can be quite extensive, and the scoring system favours the starting player a little too much, it seems.
