The Campaign/Battle Card Driven mechanic is a relatively recent development in war games that focuses the players' actions on cards they have in their hand. The very basic idea is that performing a single action uses a single card. Games where cards are used to determine the outcome of battles do not use this mechanic.

The new 2nd Ed rules punched this game up to a '9' for me. Very cool game but a bit on the complex side, given the fact that there is a big chaos element - although the complexity buys a lot of wonderful historical flavor. While on the same order of complexity as Hannibal by most of the usual metrics, somehow Successors feels more complex, perhaps just because being a 4-player game it's harder to get a game together (which leads to longer breaks, which leads to lack of retention ...). Anyway, get the play time down to 3.5-4.5 hours and this is a first-rate game; more than that, and it's probably not worth it, although expect the first game or two to run long as players get the hang of it. Will appeal to grognards who don't mind the complexity overhead. Recent release of The Napoleonic Wars has reminded me of just how good Successors is; TNW is a similar game, nominally simpler but far less clean.
Elf__Man
I have done quite well on Successors. Convincing people that it's NOT about military takes awhile though. They 'see' it after a couple of plays. (If they don't, then they quickly dislike the game) I have played with the most current erratta rules. That makes it a completely different game.
dead gerbil
It took a while to get used to the game system, due to a few unusual conventions. However, once we had played a practice game, it was quite a bit of fun. It's too bad that I'm unlikely to get a third chance to play.
