Hellboy: The Board Game
60m - 90m

Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

Backed the Kickstarter and should have known from the sparse prototype that the focus of this game was mostly on the miniatures and getting them into skirmishes. As a huge Hellboy fan, I was hoping for more story, whether through scenarios that mimicked the comics, a campaign or at the very least some narrative and Mignola-styled graphics. As it is, the game is... okay mechanically. A straight-up semi-hard-to-beat number of one-off 'Case Files' leads players to investigate (little) and combat (a lot) until a boss is defeated and the game is over. The rules have a lot of small mistakes and errata, the visual design on cards and tokens is being remade by several fan initiatives, which all-in-all speaks of a product that deserved a little more game experience research, a lot more design and development and ultimately a closer cooperation between creator, producer and community.

Outstanding game. The rules are not organized great and it would REALLY help if there were an index, but once you get going it's incredibly helpful. I loved the idea of a tutorial level, but the execution left something wanting. It would have been nicer if the game had walked us through specific actions and then let us get our own results for those actions or something similar.
