Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
Maneuvers that directly attack an opposing player's strength, level, life points or do something else to impede their progress.

Review copy. The original was a game of highs and lows, but swung low far more often and lacked replayability. The new one seems to have made the cards and job distribution more balanced at the cost of some of the highs of version 1. It's a net loss.

I didn't really get into this game. It seemed like the strategy was pretty light. Look at your hand, can you take any cards from the pyramid, if so take them, if not, play a card to get an additional card to allow you to take any cards from the pyramid. If you can't do either, play another card.

I think the expansion changes improve upon the original gameplay quite a bit. The new asymmetric ringleaders are interesting.
