Reduced rating from 8 to 7 and decided to sell the set. It's not a bad game, but the dices in this one just feel overly swingy. When an entire turn pass and every unit miss or fail to inflict any damage, the game feels boring. As I wrote in my original review, this will most likely be mitigated by strategic use of boons/blights in 2v2 and 3v3, but at 1v1 the game is pretty shallow. Unfortunately, I struggle to convince people to play again after the first match so I'm not going to spend additional 60-120 euros in an attempt to make it more appealing to them. Original comment: I love the core concept of Godtear. A fast paced skirmish game with miniatures at an accessible price is what I was looking for. The rules are super simple, but the amount of unique champions/followers offer a lot of depth and variety. The game: My main complaint is that after the first few matches the dices feel a little bit too random. A lot of attacks miss or fail to inflict damage. Increasing the number of factions and strategically using boons and blights will probably mitigate this, but the underlying randomness will stay. I saw a lot of people comparing this to chess, but I couldn’t disagree more. I see where the comparison comes from, but the over-reliance on dices means that at times even the best strategy can be stopped with very little effort. The player that plays the best match will not necessarily win if the dices fail him repeatedly or at a crucial time. There is no space for luck in chess and that’s the fundamental difference here. The components: The miniatures are nice and I like to see that every follower is different despite being part of the same unit. On the other hand, I found quite a few lightly crooked bases. Last but not least, I think that a starter set should give you enough tokens and mats to play a full game with two players. Unfortunately, that’s not the case here. Even with 2 starter sets there simply aren’t enough mats to play a 4v4 game. Yes, 3v3 is more common and the mats are not really necessary. Still, this shows lack of attention.

I love the subtle manuuvering and low piece count, allowing you to really focus on a few complex units. But then the dice are so random that that subtlety is lost. And all those complex units make it really easy to make a mistake which completely changes the game and makes it unsatisfying. So, I really really want to like this game, but I don't.

Gorgeous game from the Guild Ball guys. So far only tried 1v1 but apparently the 3v3 mode (factions, not players) is really good and still fast?
