Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

Need to play it more. Building the ships is great fun, but we seem to get too attached to them as they break apart in the adventure. We might need to loosen up a little.

I enjoy playing this game. It's light, easy enough to for new players, plays relatively quickly, and is just plain fun regardless of what happens. Sometimes, you fear each card, knowing your ship is poorly built... and you come out fine. Sometimes, you get amazingly bad luck and your actually-good ship falls apart. Still, despite the huge luck element, the best players do tend to win. And really, it's fun for everyone regardless: you built three ships, you had three voyages full of potentially-hilarious things happening to your ships, and you made money. Happy to have this one in my collection, still thinking about whether I need any expansions.

game was okay. I didn't really care for the tile reveal and ship building step, which is of course about half of the game. I am also not crazy about one diceroll completely ravaging you. Components were nice, and I liked the theme. They just lost me a bit in the execution.
