The Campaign/Battle Card Driven mechanic is a relatively recent development in war games that focuses the players' actions on cards they have in their hand. The very basic idea is that performing a single action uses a single card. Games where cards are used to determine the outcome of battles do not use this mechanic.
Campaign / Battle Card Driven
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.
Simultaneous Action Selection
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

Was pumped for this year's ago during my gloomhaven phase. Been so long unfortunately and i played a friend's copy and the joy is gone. Won't be keeping once my copy arrives.

A considerable upgrade from Gloomhaven, so far 5 games in and enjoying the setup, the playtime with my wife. Everything shines. AND THE NARRATION IS STELLAR. No need to buy an insert.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Micro Review: Frosthaven now offers the best of both worlds: improved tactical battle that requires more skill and a living world that helps long term narrative and mechanical choices make sense. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Players: :meeple: to :meeple::meeple::meeple: Heavy campaign game. Zoomed out/in - Puzzly battles - Living world campaign - Bang for the buck. Tons of content but physically heavy. [c]Theme: [/c]:star::star::star::nostar::nostar: [c]Skill: [/c]:star::star::star::star::nostar: [c]Replay: [/c]:star::star::star::star::nostar: [c]Fun: [/c]:star::star::star::star::nostar: [c]Asymmetry:[/c]:star::star::star::star::star: ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Why I love it? It is not the best zoomed in tactical game nor the best overworld campaign game, but it is excellent for both, something I've wanted since forever and no one seemed to get it right. Moreover, it fixes some issues I had with the original: -Overworld is now a living world, character retiring now makes sense. -Campaign has better consequences. -Characters are no longer unidimensional fatigue lethargy engines. -Grind: The 15/15 season cycles give urgency of gathering materials to prepare for winter. Still keeps the core card gameplay that is the gem from GH. Some of its limitations: -Best managing 2-3 heroes with 1-3 players. There are a lot of logistical barriers, definitely a 'hobby' game: -Time: requires an extreme year long commitment, a group that is also committed if you play multiplayer, a dedicated table and app helper/insert. -Fiddleness present in managing multiple monster's decks, to hit decks and many chits to setup, move around and store. -Complex. -Narrow but high difficulty: There is no hand holding, the difficulty range is hard with no lower or higher settings. -While an RPG in many aspects, the core of the game is a combat that is more of a puzzle than combat. Character cards don't even have art. -Most if not all scenarios are about killing enemies. Player Scaling: Plays best at 2-3p. 2p is more puzzle focused where action efficiency matters, 3p is a more relaxed stomp. Alternatives: -If you want a gateway, Jaws of the Lion. -Another heavy campaign card based game is Oathsworn.
