Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
The primary goal of a set collection mechanic is to encourage a player to collect a set of items.
Set Collection
A time track mechanism is a variable player-turn order mechanism by which the player who is last on the time track goes next. The function of this mechanism can allow a player to have multiple sequential turns due to being last after each one.
Time Track
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

Francis Drake has a fun gameplay loop that is split into two halves. The first half involves worker placement for shuffled tiles on a track in preparation for the round's voyage. A fight for resources fuels decisions for the seafaring phase. It presents the interesting dilemma of jumping ahead to a desired space or taking an earlier space to setup more action selections. To obtain riches players privately bid on turn priority for map spaces. Trying to figure each other's bids is a fun little mental puzzle. And if you win a space, getting to stow a treasure in a chest is a nice touch. The one issue I have with Francis Drake is that the overall gameplay arc is a little lacking. The described phases occur three times in the game and little changes between the rounds outside of tiles. There is no carryover effects so there's little to differentiate player strategy, rather the emphasis appears to be mastering the system. Because of this, the game does not evolve past its point salad gameplay. The most Francis Drakey player wins the game, and the rest of us are just lookalikes.

For "downriver" action, more tension than shipyard. Same level of tension as egizia or kraftwagen. The problem is, those two games can be played twice as fast as this.

Make three voyages after preparing your ship : seems quite simple, isn't it. Well, it is simple after all, because gameplay is clear and structured. So, although the game isn't difficult the placement of the mission discs is an exiting part of the game. It's a mix of counting and bluffing and hoping. I liked it a lot while playing and that's the reason of playing games. And of course, an Eagle game is always too big but evenso nice.
