Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.
Tile Placement
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

The thing I love about the Forbidden games is that each game gets progressively more interesting and tricky. Really good co-op game.

More complex than Desert which I already like a lot. I love the circuit aspect, the tile laying, and the multiple tracks for each character.

In many ways, this is the logical conclusion of the Forbidden series, but in ways that do it no favours. Having two separate status trackers (rope strength and health) and the feeling that you can be undone solely by bad luck at any moment, more than compared to Desert or Island, make it feel less fun to me. In addition, the fact that as the game progresses and you build more of the circuit needed, it becomes more likely that the game will kill you. That feels less like “raising the stakes” (vs either the island sinking or the storm picking up, both mechanics about encouraging you to progress) and more about active hindrance to success.
