Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.

Originally play-tested this with Eric WAY back when (before it got sent off to Grey Fox Games). Was a lot simpler back when I was play-testing, but I do enjoy the various roles for the characters and the meta-game of finding the universal cure (those are new from when I first played). Similar to in Spirit Island, there are SO many different ways to increase the difficulty of the game and I do appreciate that there are many ways to play, including NOT real-time and also stacking them horizonatally on the table. This game fills in for games like Rush MD or Kitchen Rush, but the rules overhead is FAR FAR simpler and this game could really be taught to anybody. Excited to try the expansion and even more good stuff!

A brain-burning dexterity game that is, with its base rules, aggressively not for non-gamers - very unusual for a genre I usually associate with being pretty newbie friendly. Someone really the question "can I make a medium-weight dexterity game?" and those game designers were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should. (mostly jk, the answer is they should) I first played this with 2 players and... I do not recommend that. With two, whenever someone has to verify a build or design it means all progress is completely stalled. And yes, you can adjust the timer to make it more fair (for the record, we were able to win at 15min with 2) but it still didn't feel fun. And more importantly, with two, you really don't get to see what makes this game special. What makes this game special is simply the division of labor. There's essentially several different minigames going on at once here, which allows players to pick and choose their favorite to focus on. I was able to play this game with a friend that doesn't like stacking games because she was simply happy to focus on building the little Carcassonne puzzle and verify builds. I know this doesn't sound like much, but if it's the difference between being able to play a stacking game or not it's a BIG difference!!! This a fun game, but it's best thought of as compared to other real-time co-op games, rather than other stacking games. Every game of this feels like it ends just as you're hitting your groove - which is maybe what you want in an engine-building game, but, I would argue, not in a dexterity game. I want to ride the wave a little longer and feel like I can really appreciate the structures everyone is building. But the clock is always ticking, so you never get those big group "ooohs" and "ahhhs" you typically do in these sorts of games. So, to answer where this fits into my collection is sort of complex. Is it my go-to stacking game? Not exactly. But in a way, it's an essential one because it allows me to play with people that would otherwise sit out. Is it my go-to real-time co-op game? Definitely not with 2p... with more, maybe? I need to play it more to really feel that out
