Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.
Role Playing
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

Have yet to get fully into this game, as have a few to play, but I have enjoyed it when I have played it.

This game nails the combination of RPG and board game. Many have tried, but the scope and presentation here exceed its peers. It's not quite as mechanically innovative as Gloomhaven (nor does it have hundreds of hours of content), but it most closely resembles an Ameritrash Gloomhaven mixed with A Touch of Evil. I'm also a sucker for the Ravenloft setting which supports the old school RPG feel of the percentile dice. There's a lot of stuff going on here and it handles it all smartly, managing to setup and break down relatively quickly. Love the single map tiles for encounters and how smooth the transition is. Complaints are that I think the stories are only slightly replayable and lose their excitement after the initial run-through, so content is limited. Expansions of course can alleviate this. It's also a price well worth paying for the more focused story content of the game. Minis, components, and illustrations are all very solid and add to the overall experience. This was a game that saw a lot of attention in development and it shows. --------------------------------------------------- Full review: https://geekandsundry.com/folklore-the-affliction-is-the-board-game-to-get-your-group-into-rpgs/

Bought but never played. Maybe we'll take it up - but I doubt it. The reason is that it seems decent to start this game.
