Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.
Role Playing
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

This game is exceptional at bringing the player into the story world. It requires some commitment, which is asking a lot in today’s flooded market, but it’s well worth it if you can get it to the table. I fantasize about playing this game more than I actually do, but my small collection of memories are meaningful ones. Give Folklore it’s due, and I seriously doubt you’ll be disappointed.

Captures the "RPG in a box" feel with a cool gothic horror setting. Story is really fun to progress through, able to convey a fair amount of atmosphere. Unfortunately you'll spend a lot of time in combat, which manages to be both fiddly with a lot of little modifiers to keep track of, but often boils down to simplistic back and forth dice chucking affairs. Seems to be out of loyalty to RPG systems, but could really have used a little more development and streamlining for the sake of the board game experience. That said I still enjoy the character archetypes and all of the ghoulies you encounter. And like an rpg it's more fun when your characters level up and get more options and equipment. This is one of the only games where I feel pulled to keep playing even after having finished a good session. If you're looking for another dungeon crawler there's better stuff. But if you're looking for a narrative experience and are willing to put up with some mechanical clunkiness it's worth a shot.

Kickstarter backer of expansion. Too unbalanced, tried two and three character solo-games. Too few options to regain vita/health. No fun if you NEED to have the Priest to even survive. Wish there were a way to play it on "easy", cause the story and mechanics are fine, just too hard (random?) for me. Might try it again playing with some house rules to make it easier/more fun to play.
