Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

The first play went well. The frequent acquisition of goal cards during the game reminded me of the ticket selection in Ticket to Ride. You can get ones that are worthless, or you can get ones that you've already completed. In Expancity a worthless card will not hurt you; in TtoR, you may have to keep a card that you do not want.

I was thrilled to finally have the opportunity to play Expancity recently. What surprised me most about the game is the rapid fire pace of turns once everyone gets a sense for the flow of the game. It's quick, interesting, has lots of room for both strategic and tactical decision making without turns getting bogged down. My significant other not only had no interest in the theme but generally avoids city building games as being "banal." I knew if I could get her to try Expancity the game would be a huge hit with her and it was. Expancity will be hitting the table frequently in our home in the coming months. It's great as a 2-player game and we look forward to sharing it with guests who have varying degrees of investment in the hobby as well. If you're looking for a fast-paced game with some strategic and tactical meat on its bones Expancity just may be the ticket for you. As an added bonus the components are great and very fun to fiddle with.

Extremely light and easy to play. Great table presence. There's some good turn angst here with timing when to try to complete contracts or prepare for the future.
