Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.
Simultaneous Action Selection
Maneuvers that directly attack an opposing player's strength, level, life points or do something else to impede their progress.

I love Evolution! I'm still not the best at it, as we've only played a few times, but it's super fun and is different every game, and the number of players makes a huge difference too. It really has a lot of choice involved, and mimics a lot of real life stuff. I'm excited for the climate expansion to arrive, as i ordered it, and it looks like it will improve the game even more!

This game is thematically well designed to be able to demonstrate natural selection through a short game play. The randomness in drawing cards represent mutation in DNA. And the scarcity of the food and how there are so many traits to be combined into different unique species types and ecosystem. For those who gave this game a low score after one play and accusing hat a big carnivore is he ultimate solution totally stopped thinking straetgically to find ways to counter it. This gave is totally amazing and with great educational value.

Competitive multi-used hand management cards game where players manage several animals and the global temperature. What makes it special? * Multi-used cards where players discard cards to determine the available food and to manipulate the weather which may have effects all players * Feeding species from a shared food pool * High direct player interaction (starvation and getting eaten, attacking other players or yourself cannot be avoided) Pros: + Artwork (detailed, strange coloring) + Theme (evolution, survival of the fittest) + Components (great first player token, food tokens, recessed species boards, + Multi-used cards: add traits to an species, discard to create a new species, discard to increase population or body size of an species + Managing species: increase number of traits, population size to score more points, and body size to defend / attack + There is no hand limit (players can hold cards to play later for better timing) + Limited traits: each species can have no more than 3-4 traits (prevents Uber species) + Shared food management: all species need food, the amount depends on the size of the population (if not fed population will drop down). Food is taken from a common food pool shared by all players (competition) + Carnivore species attack other species (even your own) with lower body size (direct player interaction) + Relative position between the species is important for some traits that give boni to their neighbors + Player order: first player can pick up food first, but also has to reveal his played cards first + Organic ebb and flow of the game (constantly adapting your species) + Easy to teach and learn but hard to master Neutrals: # Language dependent: text on trait cards # Theme is a bit odd (manipulate climate) # Direct player interaction: by card effects, competition for food, climate change (indirect) # Scales well from 3-5 players # Hidden information: players reveal in player order # Luck of the draw # The available food each round is very hard to predict in games with high player counts # There are not a lot of different traits in the game which makes strategies more predictable (if you do not count in all the promo cards) # May be too mean spirited for some players Cons: - Takes some time for beginners to play competitive (no catch-up mechanic) - When there are a lot of traits in play, it is not that easy to keep all traits (of all players) in mind - Multiple players may group and bully another player Similar games: * Oceans: An Evolution Game (successor, multi-used cards, direct player interaction, Ocean theme, much more streamlined) * Evolution: Climate: Same game but adds climate events that can indirectly be triggered by the players * Deus (hang management engine builder with area control and take-that)
