Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration.Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

A great space-themed board game with gorgeous art, and far shorter and more enjoyable than many 4x board games, while still feeling grandiose (although it still takes nearly 180 minutes every time instead of 90 minutes). I do wish the rules were a little less fiddly, with some questionable movement, influence, and action rules that make moving and attacking feel far too weak. If you adjust the movement to reflect that in Scythe, the gameplay flows so nicely, and feels more balanced. I also wish Ryan had implemented a single-player variant, since I hardly get it to the table due to the long setup.

Decent 4X game that is not too long, keeps you involved and has close scoring. Not really my type of game though.

There is a lot of different elements going on in this game that harken to others. It's like a mixture of Islebound, Firefly, Scythe, and Tiny Epic Galaxies, but limiting it to those comparisons is doing it an disservice. The planets feel alive, and play a huge roll in impacting the game itself with event cards that change in every game. Replayability is through the roof. To me, this is Ryan's masterpiece. It's a game that takes the strengths of his other games and throws it into one glorious box. My small complaint is how daunting setup can be, but boy is it worth it.
