Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.

Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

This should come with a sticker that says "NOT A 4X GAME". Empires of the Void II is a hearty, melodramatic space opera. EotVII is slow and plodding, but mechanically very enjoyable. Each game plays out like a unique story of this snapshot in space. I wish this was snappier, but I've come to appreciate it it's slow and methodical design. If you want a big vibrant space adventure, with occasional combat, occasional narrative...then this going to fit that very niche desire of yours.

Faster and easier than eclipse. High replayability and the alien races are created with a lot of love. It is another great ryan laukat!

With a metal start player token, that replaces the 1st player card. I use obslete player card to separate the 10 recommended event cards for your first play. Needs some good packing system to reduce the long setup time. Beautiful game with nice player interaction and nice missions. And all playable with 4 players in 90 to 120 min.
