Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.

Really fascinating game! What a great surprise with original mechanics. The possibilities open up more and more with each play.

Positives: Interesting area scoring. I like that you get points for building next to wharfs through area control but movement up the council track (for bonuses) when building next to opponents. I like the engine building. I like the 7 Wonders style handling of resources. I like all the different ways to score (building buildings, area control, goal cards, individual player powers. Plus, multi-use cards! Negatives: Not the best at 2. Really meant for 3-4. I don't particularly like goals where there's 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place. There isn't enough disparity in the scoring between first and second to make it worth going hard after the goal cards. Overall: Embarcadero is a good mix of multi-use card hand management, tile laying, and engine building. There's lots of interesting choices in the interlocking systems and there were plenty of times during the game where I was at a loss for exactly how to plan out my next few moves. If you love games with decent long term strategy you can actually pull off, Embarcadero might be for you.

This game is way too fiddly, bad iconography and lots of horrible rules that you are most likely to forget. Renegade games missed the mark on this one….
