El Grande Big Box
90m - 90m
2 - 5 Players
Ages 12+
This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Games that use the Memory mechanic require players to recall previous game events or information in order to reach an objective.
Memory
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.

It's a classic for a reason. If there is a better area control game, I'd like to play it. It's interactive, tense, tactical, and has some great moments. It also has that classic brown hue from the classic 1990s games, which has aged well and lends it a certain charm. (Why the king looks like a giant penis I will never know.)

Had to try the age old area majority game. Interesting strategies, but not likely in my favorite as it seems more abstract and hard for me to even think of the actual theme.

El Grande is a classic and one of the first area control games. + Hidden area selection in scoring phase (one's meeple from Castello are moved to a certain region) + Power cards have plenty of special actions + Players can play with individualized decks + A lot of variety (different expansions, different decks) + Worker management: having enough in one's own court / supply + Simple scoring (majority and ties) + Smooth, simple turns + Rules are well written # Artwork is okay, oldschool # Abstract gameplay # Better with higher player counts: 4-5 # Memory element for Castello tower - Map does not scale with different player counts - Some expansions make the game longer or more complex without improving it - Oversized game box Related games: * Ethnos (area control, hand management / set collection, quicker playing time) * Royals (multi-layered area control with ticket-to-ride-style hand management) * Blue Moon City (area control, card driven, controlling dragons, race for crystals, modular board) * Triassic Terror (mean area control with dinosaurs) * Tammany Hall (area control, negotiation) * The Expanse (area control with card selection similar to Twilight Struggle, asymmetric factions) * Rattus (area control with role selection) * Eight-Minute Empire: Legends (light area control driven by cards)
