This mechanic requires you to place a bid, usually monetary, on items in an auction of goods in order to enhance your position in the game. These goods allow players future actions or improve a position. The auction consists of taking turns placing bids on a given item until one winner is established, allowing the winner to take control of the item being bid on. Usually there is a game rule that helps drop the price of the items being bid on if no players are interested in the item at its current price.
Auction/Bidding
Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Games that use the Memory mechanic require players to recall previous game events or information in order to reach an objective.
Memory
The simultaneous action selection mechanic lets players secretly choose their actions. After they are revealed, the actions resolve following the rule-set of the game.

For those who know me, they must be tired of hearing me praise this, the only game so good in my book, it reaches perfection. The game is a great balance in all aspects. It's not too short, nor too long, keeping an ideal 90 minute run. It's not a light game by any means, but it's certainly not the heaviest game in my list. It does have tactical decisions, but it lets you plan a long term strategy, and with the [thing=370][/thing] expansion, it can even let you plan ahead and try to prevent other players from messing up your plans. Mostly  The core mechanism itself is just area majority, but man, is it the best area majority game ever imagined. And to think it's a 25 year old game, and no one has been able to top it, just blows my mind. It also has a lot of player interaction. You can be as peaceful or as mean as you want, but you can't expect to be left alone! All in all, a game that's as fun as it can get. The components are also nice enough without being pretentious (and increasing the game price tag significantly). Plus, this particular edition has all the expansions included, and they really work well with this already perfect game. It's been my number one game since I first played it back in 2003, and it's very likely it will remain amongst my top 3 games for the rest of my life.

It's a classic for a reason. If there is a better area control game, I'd like to play it. It's interactive, tense, tactical, and has some great moments. It also has that classic brown hue from the classic 1990s games, which has aged well and lends it a certain charm. (Why the king looks like a giant penis I will never know.)
