The Ancient Uprising has been put down, and a fragile peace again holds in the galaxy…but suddenly, everything changes. Several new factions rise to disturb the status quo. The Unity nanomachines bend energy and matter to their will. The Shaper ships tear the spacetime fabric apart, while insignificant Octantis factions take a developmental leap after leap forward. It almost seems like the base laws of the universe no longer apply.
Eclipse: Shadow of the Rift introduces several new mechanisms to Eclipse, including Time Distortion, Evolution and Anomalies, as well as several new Rare Technologies, Developments and Discoveries. It includes two new player boards with three new different alien species from which to choose. Due to its modular design, you can use all of these additions or just some of them in any game of Eclipse according to your preferences and play style. The expansion does not require the Rise of the Ancients expansion, but is fully compatible with it.
As the shadows unfold from the rifts of spacetime, can your civilization stand unbroken?

Good expansion, doesnt add that much new rules. But the new choices it adds.improve the replayabillity. Of the game

Good expansion, but not on the level of ROTA. I'm annoyed that the new races don't have their own colors/ships, but shrug. Still good.

(Up from 9 base game) Haven't played more than a game or 2 with this new one, so thoughts are provisional. The new races are weird, in exactly the intriguing ways that make games like this great. So, that's a big thumbs-up on the most important part. We haven't tried playing with the rifts, but they look a little swingy, like the ancient hives but worse. Ed. Actually, the rifts aren't that bad, as you can choose whether they'll be active or not as they invade. The rift cannons are definitely powerful, and I'm not sure I like them. The amount of damage you can do is quite high, and the risk to your own ships pretty minimal. They also negate the need for computers, since your hit chance comes pre-buffed, and make shields even worse than they were already. Not as overloaded with modules as the last expansion, but has support for the things the first pioneered, so it's still good. Plays: very few (3-4?)
