Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.

First board game where I don't like drawing event cards (called encounters in this game).Which is a problem because it is a huge part of this game. In this game you draw so many (there are almost no positive ones) that it leads to tactics that imo are thematically weird. Like splitting up your party so you explore new tiles seperately just to avoid drawing more event (encounter) cards. There are also no skill checks, just rolls against AC to determine a hit with everything. So no trying to dodge falling rocks from an encounter card, just a roll against AC. So somehow your agile rogue just gets hit more likely. I thought it was very underwhelming and it annoyed me too much. But to end on a positive note : My annoyances with this game is because of a lack of detail in the mechanics. But this also means that it is very easy to pick up and play the first time. Great to introduce ppl who are new to board gaming.
Hussman
Played a couple of times. One of my first games I bought. Minis are solid, artwork really good. Combat could be better. Will probably play again sometime.

Gloomhaven light. When you don't have enough time for Gloomhaven, you can play DotMM. Fast to teach, even to casual player. Difficulty swings a bit between adventures. Seems a bit too hard on some quests and requires good optimization and luck on monster draws. d20 rolling is a plus, which gives the game a d&d feeling (as do skills). The game could use more skills to choose from as on campaign you seldom need to change them when you find a good combination.
