Gives a lot of the Hero Quest feeling I've been looking for over the years since I used to play it so often. Really enjoyed it so far with my son.

Best game in the collection of D&D AS. Nice upgrades to the levl 4 and epic battles. The campaign feels really engaging and the character progression is much better.

A definite improvement to the standard D&D Adventure System fare, this entry adds a lot to like, but suffers from some of the same downfalls of the previous entries as well as some new issues. Dungeon of the Mad Mage adds multiple town locations through its campaign, the ability to double the level that your characters could achieve before, adds new Expert Powers to its roster of hero’s abilities, and adds some new balancing tweaks to make for a more forgiving game altogether. For example, the introductory adventure to the campaign has you track down and kill 4 human enemies as your goal. You can explore and expand the dungeon at your own pace, because the encounter cards are less of a punch in the gut this time around. Since it’s mostly focused on combat rather than exploration, it allows you a good chance to get to know your character, their abilities, and what works and what doesn’t in certain combat situations. The next adventure has you discovering a specific tile and fighting a couple of special enemies. Though they sort of behave similarly to a boss, they are much easier to take down, but still threatening. These monsters incorporate the spell deck system introduced in the Tomb of Annihilation entry, and teach you how to pay attention to an enemy’s special effects. The issues arise in how new this entry is. As of the first printing, there are multiple errors and issues with the pieces that need to be sorted out. Abilities mismatched from the cards in the rule book, characters with erroneous stats, and pieces with improper names can cause some confusion. I’d suggest you wait until a future printing of this title before picking it up. This game shows that the D&D Adventure System series is really starting to make some serious steps in the right direction.
