Disappointing and overpriced dungeon crawler- only the most superficial resemblance to a "real" RPG. We were looking forward to playing a lighter take on D&D between campaign sessions, but this did not scratch the itch. Somehow this game manages to be more strategically one-dimensional and mechanically bloated: your character will rarely want to do anything during their turn but move and roll a D20 to attack some random donk, but at the same time, a "banker" is required to manage the myriad stacks of cards, tokens, dungeon tiles, and models. Why all the extra stuff, when it doesn't really add that much to the game? Perhaps because the base rules are so bare-bones that the emperor would be quickly revealed as naked without all the bells and whistles. Even the two traditional pleasures of dungeon crawling, looting and leveling, are sadly lacking. We didn't encounter any items of note in the first few missions, and since experience isn't gained until after the mission, characters don't often have a chance to gain any new abilities or buffs mid-game. This unfortunately means that players rarely have a chance to meaningfully expand their already sparse decision trees. There are better games out there at this price point: Descent, Imperial Assault, and of course Gloomhaven all offer a better dungeon crawling alternative in pretty much all respects. I'd recommend any of those (and even Mageknight) before I played ToA again.

This line shouldn't have been branded "adventure system" and instead a more strightforward - Dungeons and Dashing: [Title of each here]. The game system almost punishes deep exploration. Instead pushing you to always be moving forward towards your goal as quickly as possible and gaining far more reward the less you linger. Otherwise you run a real risk being overwhelmed. That said, for a minitures game light on rules and high on rolling dice and quickly resolving every phase? Pretty decent. Somethings in the rulebook could be explained better, particularly setup involving the decks and traps. The core mechanics are very light and quick which may be a drawback if you are after heavy thoughtful tactics. Also a lot of it COULD have been made smaller outside of the tiles and minitures to save tablespace and not have impacted the game at all. On the plus side the minitures tiles and artwork all are awesome and work together pretty well. Comes with a set of interlinking adventures to run too that will changeup the decks and keep things fresh for awhile. Sturdy cardstock and a heavy vault of a box for it all are solid and will holdup for a long time. Overall this is a simple game but I had some decent fun playing it. Others should probably look at more modern offerings for the price point unless the idea of a mad dungeon dash that wont make you think to deep sounds appealing.

B-day B-game! It was the last one on Amazon…none of the pre-pianted one left. My hands were tied…then I hesitated. It went down $10 the next day…now I’m getting bit by flying snakes in the jungle! -H7
