Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.
Role Playing
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

Nice updating of the D&D Adventure System games. Adds some fun new things (buying upgrades, discrete traps) without changing the heart of the game.

Played this in a group of 5, all of us fairly new to it. Overall I definitely liked it, but it had one specific mechanic that wasn't to my taste and puts me off: - Encounter cards felt a little frustrating. They frequently took out a quarter of a player's HP and you generally ended up drawing them almost every turn. I think the lack of interaction or control over this element (which was where the vast majority of the difficulty came from) felt somewhat "cheap". I would have preferred more monsters and tougher monsters to increase the difficulty. Other comments (neutral & positive): - A fair bit of down time. A lot of this was the fact we were new players, but later on it was a good thing. We'd be discussing tactical choices for how to make it out by the skin of our teeth. The good kind of downtime! - Nice miniatures - Nice mix of character skills, some of them complementary. Really got you working together.

Snoozefest. Takes out the only fun part of D&D, the role-play, and leaves the boring mechanics. Random weird athematic unexplained event/encounters thrown in on top of a terribly thin storyline make this one just awful.
