Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.
Role Playing
Variable Player Powers is a mechanic that grants different abilities and/or paths to victory to the players.

For some reason, this one seemed a lot cleaner than the other DnD board games. I'm not sure if they actually improved it, or I'm just getting more used to how these games play. I am a little disappointed that the figures are unpainted, but since they are roughly available through the miniatures boosters, I should be able to upgrade the game with those.

Need to play this in a campaign setting but it plays like the other DnD adventure games with new heroes and LOTS of traps to either disarm or move past. Monsters are beefier in this set and the leveling happens as part of the adventure instead of when you crit. Definitely an enjoyable game.

For being at a point in my life now where getting together with a group of people for a 2-4 hour DnD sesh is just not possible, this is a nice little alternative. It probably isn't the best dungeon crawler out there, but it is a simplefied version of one that, for me anyway, scratches the DnD experience itch. I can play it by myself (sad) or with a buddy who's just as busy as I am (not as sad). I am looking forward to seeing what kind of creative ways I can combine the Elemental Evil set with the Legend of Drizzt set. I've also found an alternitive passion for painting minis...badly, but I'm having fun and that is what counts.
