Dice rolling in a game can be used for many things, randomness being the most obvious. Dice can also be used as counters. The dice themselves can be unique and different sizes, shapes and colors to represent different things.
Dice Rolling
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Some board games incorporate elements of role playing. It can be that players control a character that improves over time. It can also be a game that encourages or inspires storytelling.

WOTC has finally got the D&D boardgame thing right! I really liked the other 3 games (especially Drizzt), but wow, this one just feels right. The balance is spot on. Heroes are powerful, but more monsters come out. The trap mechanism introduces a nice push your luck aspect as well. The Campaign mode (3 adventures in) is a blast! Being able to get better as the game goes on, AND have the game get more difficult, is so cool. I really like how the characters not in the adventure get money as well as I play solo 3 player and like to swap out characters. I hope Wizards continues to make these as I will be a loyal customer if they are as good as this!

I have combined most of the basic monsters from all the sets. Ones that were really thematic, I play only within their set with the rest of the combined monsters that I play in all of the sets. That alone, adds to the excitement factor. I'm still in the middle of adding my own rule additions... Not a fan of the new trap system, but it does add another strategic element to game play in terms of where do you want to go. So it is actually better in that regard. Once I get the newest game in the series, my score will jump up to 8 due to the new leveling system that allows characters to get to level 4 and for the added basic monsters and villains, contributing to creating a bigger fantasy world in which to adventure...
