PLAYED AT ESSEN SPIEL 2023. First impressions: - Miniatures: they are amazing and with huge level of detail. It is also positive that they are larger than I am used too (including the miniature of smaller Mystlings). - Art: illustrations on map, arena and journal look really beautiful and with a very appropriate pallete and color scheme for this type of game. The art on the CARDS also looks great, HOWEVER THEY FEEL EXTREMELY GENERIC. THIS IS ESPECIALLY PROBLEMATIC FOR MYSTLING-EXCLUSIVE CARDS. For example, I was playing with a deck of 10 cards of the dragon-like Mystling named Emberling. This deck was composed by 7 general cards + 3 Emberling-exclusive cards. HOWEVER, THIS MYSTLING DID NOT APPEAR IN ANY OF THE CARD ILLUSTRATIONS, SO IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO FEEL ANY ATTACHMENT FOR YOUR MYSTLING AND IT STRONGLY REDUCES IMMERSION. In addition, SOME OF THE CARDS DEPICT COMPLETELY UNRELATED CREATURES LIKE A PANTHER OR A LION THAT ARE NOT PART OF THIS FANTASY WORLD. THIS FEELS STRONGLY ANTI-THEMATIC. Although the art on the cards is beautiful, they feel strongly generic: just a random combination of flames, explosions beams and random creatures (that are not Mystlings or part of this fantasy world!!) - Combat: This is the core mechanics of the game. It feels strongly inspired by Super Fantasy Brawl with maybe some slight touch of Pokémon TCG. I felt like I was playing a 1 vs 1 match of Super Fantasy Brawl in which the opponent was controlled by an A.I. and its only objective was to kill my character, while I could fulfill additional goals to tame the creature. Deck of 10 cards 5 available to be played at any moment. Depending on the position that you card occupy on your play area, you will receive a variable amount of "elemental tokens". Then you can use these to perform additional general actions or to increase the power/effects of the actions on your cards. It is probably needed to get familiarized with your cards before you can perform interesting combos and efficient card combinations that could feel satisfying. Not completely sure about the strategic depth. My biggest concern is how different would feel to play different Mystlings. Each Mystling has different stats, different special ability and three exclusive cards, while the rest is coming from the "common/universal" cards. I doubt you can feel a strong difference as compared to other games like Gloomhaven in which each character has its own unique deck with completely unique cards.
