Card drafting games are games in which players pick cards from a limited subset, such as a common pool, to gain some advantage (immediate or longterm) or to assemble hands of cards that are used to meet objectives within the game.
Card Drafting
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.
Modular Board
Tile Placement games feature placing a piece to score VPs, with the amount often based on adjacent pieces or pieces in the same group/cluster, and keying off non-spatial properties like color, "feature completion", cluster size etc.
Tile Placement
Variable Phase Order implies that turns may not be played the same way as before and/or after.
Variable Phase Order
This mechanism requires players to select individual actions from a set of actions available to all players. Players generally select actions one-at-a-time and in turn order. There is usually(*) a limit on the number of times a single action may be taken. Actions are commonly selected by the placement of game pieces or tokens on the selected actions. Each player usually has a limited number of pieces with which to participate in the process.

a bit shorter than is big brother but still a bit too long for what it is... some things just feel means for the sake of being mean

I like it and want to love it, but I'm not sure it's my jam. It's very tactical, and you must react to a lot of randomness. Chits are being pulled from bags, tiles are flipping from a stack, and cards are drawn from a deck. These elements can have drastic consequences on the board state and scoring opportunities. With time, you learn how to deal with the probability of certain situations arising. I'm just not sure I will be spending enough time on this game to make it shine. If I were to choose, I would prefer this version to the original DS, but there was a mind game element to programming that was also fun and isn't present anymore. Also, you get significantly involved in the game for a two-hour game or so, and I find that the swinginess can be highly frustrating. I love many games that create frustrating situations (Pax Pamir, John Company, Root), but I'm not sure this one is for me.

Almost as good as the original, but possibly easier to teach/learn as there is no programming involved - all workers placed occur immediately.
