Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

Nice eurogame with a smart use of cards. Rules are simple and easy to teach. The board is modular but the area control element is kinda minor. The whole point of the game is to make great combos with chains of cards. Gameplay is fast and smooth. There seems to be enough different strategies to explore. There is a bit of luck in the game but I found it acceptable. Components are of good quality but there is a minor color problem. Wood is shown as green on the cards but the game comes with brown disks. There is enough interaction for a eurogame.

In an age of overwrought mechanics, Deus is pleasingly streamlined, elegant and easy to explain. It is a tableau builder with a modular board on which players build, grab territory and extract resources. Despite the territory grabbing, interaction in this game is limited to denying opponents land and thieving a few coins or vps. So far as the tableau building is concerned, I didn't get the feel, as I do with Race for the Galaxy, of multiple viable strategies. Too often, across two games, my decision space has felt limited to playing the one or two cards that I could afford and which worked with my other cards and board position, or cycling through the deck. The ease of refreshing your hand at least mitigates the luck of the draw. Production quality, at least of the first printing, is mixed. The components are serviceable, but the brown disks to represent green resources and the miscoloured money bear the hallmarks of a rushed production process. Similarly, while the card artwork is pleasant enough, the modular board is pug ugly.

A game of card combos :D Really enjoyable, middle-weight, but you need to be aware of the fact that the luck of the draw can hit you hard.
