Hand management games are games with cards in them that reward players for playing the cards in certain sequences or groups. The optimal sequence/grouping may vary, depending on board position, cards held and cards played by opponents. Managing your hand means gaining the most value out of available cards under given circumstances. Cards often have multiple uses in the game, further obfuscating an "optimal" sequence.
Hand Management
Play occurs upon a modular board that is composed of multiple pieces, often tiles or cards. In many games, board placement is randomized, leading to different possibilities for strategy and exploration. Some games in this category have multiple boards which are not used simultaneously, preserving table space. Unused boards remain out of play until they are required.

I really like this game a lot. I wonder, though, why I have not played it for so long (almost 3 months) after having played it 7 times in May.

Deus is a hand management engine builder with resource management and area building by Sebastien Dujardin (Troyes). Includes some take-that cards (red, military). It is all about finding combos between the building cards. There are 5 types of buildings, the cards used to build them represent their abilities. Players have limited number of buildings for each type and try to build adjacent to already built buildings depending on the terrain. Some buildings can only be built on certain terrain. If 4 temples have been built the game ends. Players try to surround barbarian villages to score points. Players can throw cards away to get new cards plus something else which is more satisfying than just gaining new card like in other games. The game is tactical due to the luck of the draw and sometimes players have to throw away certain cards in their hand which makes long term strategies difficult. + Engine building / escalation: each additional cards triggers all other already placed cards (similar to Wingspan) Similar games: * Evolution (Climate) (hand management engine builder with take-that carnivores, very thematic) * Wingspan (hand management engine builder, area building on player board instead on shared island, no take-that but positive player interaction)

Smart hand management mechanics in this game where timing between discarding and building is really important ! Placement and moves of the military units are something to take care too if you don't want your opponents to gain too much victory points by taking down barbarian villages... Not quite a "civilization" game, but still a great game !!!
